Dr. Natasha Kamal was inspired to go into medicine by watching her father, also a gastroenterologist, have a dynamic and rewarding career.  She thought gastroenterology was the right fit because it allowed her to both work with her hands during endoscopy and develop long-lasting patient-relationships at the bedside.

After graduating Magna cum Laude from the University of Pennsylvania, with a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology and Biology, Dr. Kamal returned home to the University of Maryland for her medical degree. During medical school, Dr. Kamal fell in love with clinical research and decided to spend a year at the National Institutes of Health as a Clinical Research Training Program Fellow. It is at the NIH, that Dr. Kamal started to study a rare condition that caused inflammation of the gut. This sparked her interest in the area of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. She completed her residency training at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in Manhattan, NY, followed by a hospitalist year at Johns Hopkins Bayview hospital. She then pursued two additional fellowships in gastroenterology and inflammatory bowel disease at the National Institutes of Health and the University of Maryland. She served as chief fellow at the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Kamal has authored over 30 publications in her career so far.

Dr. Kamal takes an evidence-based approach to medicine. She feels like there is so much confusing information available to patients and she finds it important to take the time to help patients sort through it all with shared-decision making.

Dr. Kamal has lived in Maryland most of her life. She currently lives in Frederick with her husband, two daughters, and dog, Charlie. She is a city-girl at heart and in her free time, she enjoys working out at the YMCA and sipping a cocktail and laughing with friends.
